Today, I climbed high in a tree
and saw an empty nest;
which filled me first with fear,
then awe.
Every twig and branch, still in
its rightful place---so far
but lonely as a lonely night's sole star.
Where once the sound of chirping filled the nest-
Now, only silence broods surprising rest.
They all have left this shell
and gone away,
and taken with them life's sweet
song today.
We, all of us are sparrows
here at home.
Till we are bid to take up
flight, then roam.
And when we're gone we're sorely missed for long-
Until the day He gathers us
and makes us strong
enough, with Him,
to sing along again, Life's sweeter song.
and then again.
Life's sweeter song .
I dedicate this song to a dear friend who has just departed to be with the Lord. His name is Billy.
I was contemplating his 'flight from this world' when I poured out my grief into this poem.
"Billy, someday we'll sing life's sweeter song together when God gathers us for that blessed reunion!" Until then, I will remember your gentle spirit.
Rest in peace dear friend.
